Description
JML Engineering was awarded the project to stabilize severe erosion of a riverbank on the Pic River in Pukaskwa National Park. Erosion occurred after unseasonably high water levels on Lake Superior. The erosion occurred adjacent to the Park’s floating dock.
The project was initiated with a Geotechnical Investigation by a sub-consultant. A topographic and bathymetric survey of the site was also completed.
The detailed design consisted of using a bioengineered slope solution rather than a traditional rock-armouring solution. The design ultimately utilized a rock core topped with fill and stabilized with transplanted trees from within the Park. Mooring anchors were also installed to facilitate the installation and removal of floating dock systems at the site.
During construction JML Engineering completed periodic inspections, a site visit to the nearby quarry to inspect the armour stone and full time inspection was done during the installation of the rock core.
